Diseases Tetanus

The Disease

Tetanus is a serious infection caused by tetanus bacteria. The incubation period is generally between 4-21days. It affects the body's nervous system, causing painful muscle spasms, and can be fatal. Tetanus bacteria are present in soil and manure and the disease develops when the bacteria enter the body, usually through a wound or cut that has become contaminated with dirt or soil

Distribution

Tetanus is found throughout the world

Vaccination

Tetanus vaccine is normally only given as a component of combination vaccines in the U.K. Tetanus vaccination is normally recommended for anyone who has not been immunised against tetanus, or not been fully immunised. An individual who has never had a tetanus vaccination will require three doses of vaccine one month apart.

Notes for Travellers

In addition to the Routine Childhood vaccination program, travellers should receive 10 yearly boosters especially if they are travelling to areas where human tetanus immunoglobulin is not readily available. This includes areas such as Africa, Asia and South America. Immunisation against tetanus during pregnancy is extremely important in areas where hygiene may be poor around the time of delivery. For travellers to areas where medical attention may not be accessible and whose last tetanus vaccination was more than 10 years ago, a booster dose should be given prior to travel. This is a precautionary measure in case the individual should sustain a tetanus prone injury and immunoglobulin is not available. It is important that all wounds be cleaned to as high a standard as possible regardless severity.
