Diseases Swine Flu

The Disease

Swine Flu, or Swine Influenza, is an infectious respiratory disease that usually only affects pigs. The recent outbreak of what is being called swine flu involves a new H1N1 type A influenza strain that is a combination of swine, avian and human influenza viruses. It's capable of spreading from human to human. Symptoms are similar to other flu strains: fever, cough, body and headaches, fatigue, diarrhoea and in extreme cases it can lead to death.

Distribution

The current outbreak of swine flu has now become a global pandemic. The virus has spread quickly because it is a new type of virus that few, if any, people have resistance to. Human infection with swine flu (H1N1) viruses has been confirmed in Mexico, the US, Canada, the UK, and many other countries.

Vaccination

The vaccination campaign against swine flu has been running for a number of months in the UK with priority initially being given to those considered high risk. Vaccination is now more widely available. Ask your doctor for further details.

Notes for Travellers

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office is no longer advising people against non-essential travel to Mexico.  It is important to practice good personal hygiene, such as covering the mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing or sneezing, and regularly washing hands to prevent the spread of any type of flu virus. These measures are especially important if you are in close personal contact with large groups of people, for example if travelling by bus.
