Disease Info

Diseases Hepatitis B

The Disease

Hepatitis B is an infection of the liver caused by the Hepatitis B virus. It is spread through contact with infected blood or body fluids during vaginal or anal intercourse, blood-to-blood contact or, very rarely by a human bite from an infected person. Many infections will not show symptoms. General symptoms are flu-like, jaundice and in some cases liver failure.

Distribution

Hepatitis B virus (HBV) is highly endemic in Southeast Asia, the Pacific regions and West Africa. It is common in South and Central America, the Indian subcontinent and the Middle East. It is present but rare in most of Europe, Australia and North America. (Although there are pockets of infection in these regions in certain groups such as Eskimo, Aboriginal and Maori populations)

Vaccination

There are several different vaccines available for Hepatitis B depending on individual circumstances. Vaccine effective periods vary depending on the individual. Individuals must consult a medical professional to discuss whether they require a vaccination.

Notes for Travellers

Unvaccinated travellers are at risk if they have unprotected sex or use contaminated needles or syringes for injection, acupuntcure, piercing or tattooing. An accident or medical emergency requiring blood transfusion may result in infection if the blood has not been screened for HBV. Travellers engaged in humanitarian relief activities may be exposed to infected blood or other body fluids in healthcare settings.
