Diseases Lyme Disease

The Disease

Lyme disease is a bacterial infection. You catch it from being bitten by hard-bodied ticks that are infected by the bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi. The ticks pass the bacteria to humans through feeding on blood. Lyme disease is easily treated with antibiotics. However, if left untreated, it can infect the heart, joints and nervous system. Symptoms start with a small scab on the skin where the bite took place. Latterly a reddish rash will appear. Further symptoms include, tiredness, headache and flu like symptoms.

Distribution

Lyme disease can occur anywhere that ticks are found in the UK. Forestry, heath land, moors, heather land are just some examples. Elsewhere, areas of high incidence are the United States, France, Germany, Austria, Sweden, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Slovenia, Croatia, Romania, Bulgaria and the Baltic republics. Peak times of the year for tick bites are late spring, early summer and autumn.
Recently (2009) there has been an increase in the number of reported cases in Scotland.

Vaccination

Various vaccinations are available however they are not generally available to the public.

Notes for Travellers

There is a considerable risk to travellers in all areas where ticks are prevalent. This risk is increased if people are in engaged in activities that are considered high risk, such as camping or hill walking. Precautions to avoid tick bites should always be taken.
