Diseases Influenza

The Disease

Influenza is an acute viral disease of the respiratory tract. There are three different types and many different subtypes. Transmission occurs via airborne droplets among crowded populations and in enclosed spaces. The influenza virus can persist for hours particularly in the cold and in low humidity. Transmission may also occur through direct contact with respiratory secretions and infected individuals. New subtypes can be transmitted globally within 3-6 months. The incubation period is short, usually 1-3 days. Influenza is characterised by fever, headache, myalgia, prostration, coryza, sore throat and cough. Recovery is usual within 2-7 days. Nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea are uncommon but may accompany the respiratory phase in children.

Distribution

Influenza is found throughout the world. Epidemics of Influenza occur almost every year and are caused primarily by the type A viruses, occasionally Influenza B viruses or both. In temperate zones, epidemics tend to occur in the winter and in the tropics often in the rainy season.

Vaccination

Vaccination is widely available in the UK against certain types of Influenzae both through the NHS, for those considered to be at higher risk and privately.

Notes for Travellers

Travellers to areas during the influenza season (winter and spring) are at risk of infection. Travellers at greatest risk are those who plan to travel in crowded vehicles and visit crowded areas. Travellers in the high-risk group category who plan to travel from one hemisphere to the other shortly before or during the influenza season should arrange vaccination as soon as possible after arriving at their travel destination. Vaccine for the opposite hemisphere is unlikely to be obtainable before arrival.
