Diseases Pneumococcal Infection

The Disease

Pneumococcal is caused by infection with the Streptococcus pneumoniae bacterium. It is a droplet spread disease; close personal contact with infected individuals may lead to the breathing in of the droplets causing the disease. Within two to three days the disease may start affecting the sinuses, ear cavities and respiratory system. Symptoms may include: fever, coughing, breathlessness and headaches. It may also lead to Pneumonia, Septicaemia and Meningitis. The disease is often fatal, particularly in the young, elderly and those with impaired immune systems.

Distribution

Pneumococcal infections are a worldwide health problem. Many cases lead to severe pneumonia in children under 5 years of age, causing 1 million deaths each year, mainly in developing countries. In developed countries most Pneumococcal disease occurs in the elderly. There is seasonal variation in Pneumococcal infection, with peak levels in the winter months

Vaccination

There are several vaccinations available. The two most common being the PPV and PCV. Vaccination of infants with the PVC is now routine in most developed countries. It is administered in two doses. PPV was previously more commonly used and offers protection against most Pneumococcal diseases. Top-up vaccinations are recommended for those at increased risk due to illness or impaired immune systems.

In the UK the vaccine is given to children at 2,4 and 13 months.

Notes for Travellers

There are no particular concerns for travellers with regard to Pneumococcal unless you have a history of chronic conditions.  However it is important to check that individuals have fully completed their Routine Childhood vaccinations and are up to date with all required boosters.
