Diseases Pertussis (whooping cough)

The Disease

Pertussis is a highly contagious acute bacterial disease of the respiratory tract.Transmission occurs through direct contact with respiratory discharges from infected persons by airborne routes, probably via droplet spread. Pertussis is commonly a disease of young children and is found throughout the world. Outbreaks tend to occur every 3-5 years. The incubation period is around 9 - 10 days but can be as long as 20 days. Initial symptoms include respiratory infection symptoms such as coughing, sneezing, runny nose. After one to three weeks, the cough changes character, with an increase of coughing followed by a respiratory "whoop" sound. Fits may be followed by vomiting and slight inner ear inflammation due to the ferocity of the coughing. Infants under six months of age are at greater risk of severe complications and death.

Distribution

Pertussis is found throughout the world but the risk of encountering infection is greater in less developed countries with no Routine vaccination program.

Vaccination

Pertussis vaccine is included as part of the Routine Childhood schedule for the UK and is not routinely used for travellers except as a part of this schedule.

In the UK children are given the vaccine at 2,3,4 months and 3 years 4 months - 5 years.

Notes for Travellers

Unprotected infants are at high risk , but all children and young adults are at increased risk if they are not fully immunised. The exposure to petussis is greater in developing countries so children up to the age of 7 years should be protected by vaccination.
