Diseases Cholera

The Disease

Cholera is a disease caused by bacteria and can only be found in humans. It is spread through contaminated food (especially shellfish), contact with faeces and also through water. Symptoms include severe diarrhoea and vomiting which can quickly lead to severe dehydration and sometimes death.

Distribution

The areas worst affected are: The Indian subcontinent, the Far East, Africa and South America. Due to the nature of the disease regions with “rainy seasons” can have seasonal fluctuations in cases reported.

Vaccination

Cholera vaccinations are widely available. However it is important to plan vaccinations well in advance as cholera vaccination programs can vary. Furthermore effective protection times vary according to age and other circumstances. It is important to discuss your travel requirements in detail with a medical professional. Cholera vaccine cannot be given to children under 2 years of age.

Cholera vaccination is highly recommended for:
• Individuals and families travelling to areas where there have been outbreaks of cholera.
• Individuals travelling abroad to work as a relief worker or disaster aid worker.
• Anyone travelling to remote areas in a country where cholera is a risk, and where there is no readily available health care

Notes for Travellers

Cholera vaccination is not recommended for the majority of travellers, as normal food and water hygiene precautions will be enough to prevent infection in most cases. Immunisation against Cholera must not be seen as a measure against various forms of diarrhoea. It is important to maintain a high standard of personal, food and water hygiene. It is widely recommended that individuals travelling to areas of high risk, travel with adequate re-hydration treatments.
