Diseases Anthrax

The Disease

A disease found in animals that occasionally causes infection in humans, usually involving the skin, as a result of contact with contaminated animal tissues or products from infected animals, or with anthrax spores in soil. Untreated infections may spread to regional lymph nodes and to the bloodstream, and in some cases can be fatal.

Distribution

Sporadic cases of anthrax can occur worldwide, the disease is endemic and hyper endemic in parts of Africa, South East Asia, South and Central America and parts of Europe.

Vaccination

Vaccination is not available to the general public. However in certain circumstances where individuals may be involved in activities that are considered high risk, such as working with animals in endemic regions, then vaccination may be available.

Notes for Travellers

The risk to travellers is low, most cases are related to close contact with infected animals in rural areas. Prompt treatment with antibiotics is essential. Avoid products made from animal origin such as souvenirs made from bones.
