Disease Info

Diseases Haemophilus Influenzae Type B

The Disease

Haemophilus Influenzae (Hib) is a respiratory pathogen that causes a wide spectrum of human infections that range from colonisation to meningitis. Individuals carry Hib bacteria in their nose and throat without showing any signs of the disease. Hib is spread through coughing, sneezing or through close contact with a carrier or an infected person.

Distribution

Hib is found throughout the world. However since the introduction of the vaccine as part of the Routine Childhood schedule, the number of cases in developed countries has dropped dramatically.

Vaccination

Vaccination is widely available and is  part of  the Routine Childhood vaccination program. Hib vaccine does not protect against all strains of meningitis  caused by other infections.

In the UK the vaccine is given to children at  2,3,4 and 12 months.

Notes for Travellers

Risk to travellers of contacting Hib is reduced if they have fully completed their routine childhood vaccination course.  However it is important to take precautions against the spread of any droplet disease if individuals are travelling in cramped spaces or working in endemic regions.
