Diseases Typhoid

The Disease

Typhoid fever is a serious disease which only affects humans. Symptoms include fever, headache, confusion, vague abdominal pain and constipation. Embolic rose spots may occur. Typhoid fever is spread by contact with faeces and urine normally through contaminated food (Shellfish taken from sewage-polluted water) and drinking water or person-to-person contact as a result of poor sanitation and personal hygiene.

Distribution

Typhoid fever is a global disease however it is more common in Asia, Africa, Central and South America and any areas where sanitation and sewage standards are poor.

Vaccination

Vaccination is recommended for travellers to areas where food and water are likely to be contaminated. When the risk is small vaccination may be limited only to those unable to maintain their own hygiene precautions or staying for long periods. These vaccines do not protect against para-typhoid. A previous typhoid illness does not mean reliable immunity and when indicated, vaccine should still be used. Typhoid fever vaccine cannot be given to children under 18 months old and is not 100% effective as a result not everyone who is vaccinated is totally protected.  Ideally, typhoid vaccine should be given at least one month before travelling to allow your body to develop full immunity.

Notes for Travellers

Travellers to areas where typhoid is a problem should be immunised especially if sanitation and hygiene standards are poor or participating in activities that are considered high risk. Furthermore extra attention must be given to avoid contaminated food or water and individuals must pay careful attention to maintain high levels of personal, food and water hygiene.
