Disease Info

Diseases Diphtheria

The Disease

Diphtheria is caused by infection with the Corynebacterium Diphtheriae bacteria. It is a contagious, droplet spread disease; close personal contact with infected individuals may lead to the breathing in of the droplets causing the disease. Symptoms include: fatigue, fever, a mild sore throat and problems swallowing. In some cases the disease can cause skin infections and even lead to death.

Distribution

The incidence of Diptheria has decreased significantly over the last 50-75 years in the Western World due to the high uptake of the childhood vaccine. The disease however remains a problem in developing countries such as most of Sub-Saharan Africa, parts of South-East Asia and South America.

Vaccination

Most people in developed countries will have started a primary vaccination course at a young age in accordance with individual country policy. It is essential that individuals check they have fully completed programs. Booster vaccinations for diphtheria are widely available. In general a completed diphtheria vaccination program will require a booster every 7-10 years. Individual cases may vary.

Notes for Travellers

Vaccination is especially advised for visits to endemic areas when mixing with the local population (e.g. health workers or teachers) and these groups should also receive ten yearly boosters of the low dose vaccine.
